Try not to freak out while staring into the soulful eyes of this newly discovered species of African monkey.
Scientists first discovered the lesula in the center of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Initially it was believed that this particular monkey was an owl-faced monkey (above-left), since it has similar features as the lesula.
However, the difference in coloring made them think it might be a new species, as it has been described as “unlike anything I’ve ever seen,” as one of the researchers put it. Analyzed tissued samples taken from lesulas killed by local hunters later confirmed their theory.
But despite the coloring, we think the most unsettling feature would have to be its human-like face. So creepy.
