The Election Commission is studying the need to amend laws to allow Malaysians overseas to be postal voters

Election Commission chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof made the announcement while speaking with reporters in a press conference, and that the EC was also looking into conditions to be imposed on Malaysians residing overseas:
"The only condition is (that citizens) must come back to Malaysia at least once in five years before Parliament is dissolved,” he said.

“This is to make sure that they know our political situation well before voting.”
The statement was made in response to a report presented by a Parliamentary Select Committee on electoral reform to Parliament in April, which had recommended that all Malaysians living or working overseas be allowed to vote by post. Tan Sri stated that the amendment could be presented for Parliament's approval during the next sitting:
“The system can be implemented by September if we have to amend the law, but it can be done earlier than that (if legal amendments are not needed).”
Currently, only full-time students and their spouses based overseas, as well as civil servants and their spouses working abroad, are allowed to apply to be postal voters.
