Hoax: Today Is Not The Future In "Back To The Future"
Jun 28, 2012 15:13
Sorry folks, but today is not the Future, as in the day Marty got sent "Back To The Future".
It all started with this alleged still taken off the film, which indicated that Doc and Marty McFly had traveled via their time-machine car to June 27, 2012 from October 26, 1985. The picture was first posted on the Facebook page of mobile checkout provider Simply Tap attracting only about 50 shares. It was later posted on another Facebook page set up by craft company Colour Me Fun, garnering more than 10,000 shares, nearly 1,000 Likes and 300 comments.
But the actual date shown in this clip from the movie pretty much proves that we haven’t approached “the future” just yet since it’s set for October 21, 2015.
According to Steve Berry, a social media manager for Simply Tap, the image was supposed to promote the Back to the Future trilogy Blu-ray box set for his client. Apparently, it was based on a similar hoax that took place years ago. Here's what he told Mashable:
“We promoted the image fully confident in the knowledge that everyone was familiar with the original hoax from a couple of years ago,”
“We figured that no one would fall for the same joke twice, so the caption was deliberately replicated it word for word so people would get the reference.”
