Italian Olympic swimmer Flavia Zoccari was forced to sit out a championship race at the Mediterranean Games after her swimsuit burst open at her buttocks.

22-year-old Zoccari had been wearing the controversial £318 top-of-the-line Jaked JO1 bathing costume when the disaster struck.

The swimmer burst into tears as she was forced to sit out her race.

Jaked boasts the full-body swimsuit is "more than skin" and was banned by the International Swimming Federation (FINA) earlier this year because it gave swimmers wearing it an unfair advantage.

However, the ban was lifted a month later after Jaked - which sponsors the Italian national swim team - protested the ban.

The embarrassed Zoccari later apologized for the incident.
