Ford has released photography and details of its redesigned 2010 Fusion midsize sedan ahead of the sedan’s official introduction in two weeks at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The 2010 Fusion and its yet-to-be unveiled Mercury Milan sister boast four new powertrains, including a hybrid option, and all-new, aggressive styling outside.

On the surface, Fusion gets a new front end visible in the only exterior shot the automaker has released so far. We’ll be sure to update this space with more photography as it becomes available. The edgy grille continues Ford’s “three-bar” chrome front fascias in what’s bound to be a polarizing expansion of the theme.

Under its new hood, Fusion gets four powertrain options for 2010 - replacing the outgoing two motor configuration. Previously, Fusion (and Milan) had offered a 2.3 liter, 160 horsepower four-cylinder and a 3.0 liter, 221 horsepower V6. All powertrains will be equipped with a 6F35 six-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift gate for V6 models. The four-cylinder will come standard with a six-speed manual

For 2010, the base four is upgraded to a 2.5 liter unit pumping out 175 horsepower and 172 lb-ft. of torque with variable intake variable cam timing, new exhaust manifolds and electronic throttle control. Ford says efficiency is up about 10 percent over the 2009 Fusion’s 20/28 city/highway mpg, though exact figures haven’t been released yet.

The next step up is a modified 3.0 liter V6 that puts out 240 horsepower and 228 lb-ft. of torque. A new air induction system and cam torque-actuated variable cam timing that uses camshaft torsional energy instead of pressurized oil to phase the camshaft help boost power. That unique cam torque-actuated variable cam timing helps save a little bit of fuel, Ford says, as well as responding a touch quicker to inputs than an oil-actuated variable cam timing system.

The 3.0 V6 is also E85-capable. Ford says fuel economy is up 4 to 6 percent over the 18/26 from the 2009.

New for 2010 is a 3.5-liter V6 for the new Sport model. With 263 horsepower and 249 lb-ft. of torque on tap, it is essentially the same V6 used in the Flex, Edge and a handful of other Ford vehicles.

Ford has high hopes for the 2010 Fusion and Milan hybrids, which can operate on the electric engines only up to 47 miles per hour. The hybrids feature a 2.5-liter inline-four with 155 horsepower and 136 lb-ft. of torque bolted up to a CVT transmission. Like other hybrids, the system utilizes regenerative braking, an upgraded nickel-metal hydride battery (said to be 20 percent more powerful than previous batteries) and a “smart” climate control system. The hybrids, which Ford says will be in showrooms by March 2009 at the latest, also feature the aforementioned SmartGuage system to help “coach” drivers into driving more efficiently.

Ford says the hybrid Fusions and Milans will be capable of up to 700 miles of in-town driving and that they’ll best the Toyota Camry Hybrid by at least 5 mpg in the city. The Camry is EPA-rated at 33 mpg.

2.5 and 3.0-liter Fusions will also come with available electronic power steering. The 3.0 features an extra-aggressive deceleration fuel shutoff that Ford says will come on 2.5-liter models late in 2010.
